Synopsis

The Funkhaus Nalepastraße (Nalepastraße Radio Station) is a complex of buildings located in the eastern district of Oberschöneweide, Berlin. From 1956 to 1990, its premises housed the headquarters of Funkhaus der DDR, the public radio station of the German Democratic Republic. Despite the fact that the Funkhaus has been built long time ago its studios are still attracting international artists, orchestras and music producers thanks to their sound quality, optimal reverberation time and good equipment.
The perfect construction and acoustics achieved in the radio studios still represent a technical masterpiece in the present day, achieved by the architect Franz Ehrlich, the chief engineer Gerhard Probst and the acoustician Lothar Keibs. The building intended to house the studios was designed according to the Haus-in-haus principle, whereby each studio is built with its own foundations isolated from the container building, from whose vibrations it is separated by independent expansion joints. The choices made in the wood cladding for ceilings and floors are aimed at being able to filter or absorb certain frequencies, while even in some studios the walls have been equipped with rotating prisms whose faces are covered with different materials: depending on the desired acoustics, the rotation of the prisms leads to the formation of different acoustic environments that meet the particular needs.
Monica Dovarch follows the artist Antony Hequet who wants to present the building.
